Volunteer Spotlight - Ron Purcella

Ron Purcella has been volunteering on Saturdays at NW Tacoma FISH for nearly five years. Since retiring in February after 43 years as a pharmaceutical rep, he "decided to come in more often" and has been working nearly full-time at FISH.

NW Tacoma FISH coordinator Debbie Price calls Ron her "right-hand man." She says, "I don't know what we'd do without him."

Ron first came to FISH when he was looking online for something to help him keep busy. He discovered that he really likes talking with clients and working with the other volunteers. "You have that daily contact and you know that you're helping," he says, adding that it's especially affecting to see children and young couples come in. He notes that NW Tacoma FISH, like alll of the food banks, is seeing more and more people as the economy continues to falter. "Thank goodness we're able to be here," he says. And thanks to you, Ron, for all you do to feed people in need!

FISH hits the road!

Our new mobile food bank launched in October with stops at Grace Place in Tacoma and at Northeast Tacoma Elementary School. This is the county's first completely self-contained mobile food bank and one of only a few in the country. With this pilot project, we are looking to reach underserved areas of Pierce County, where there is high need but no food bank access. Read more on our blog, and see Kathleen Merryman's article in The News Tribune.
